After retiring, Tom and Ellen began spending more unhurried time in the Pine Brook Hills home they had loved for years. They still appreciated its mountain setting, natural woodwork, and quiet views, but their bathroom’s functional inconveniences had been adding accumulated frustration over the years. The narrow floorplan felt interrupted by competing door swings, storage was limited, and the cold floor made winter mornings especially uninviting.

Ellen imagined a bathroom that felt light, peaceful, and uncluttered. Tom wanted warmth, both underfoot and in the material, and for the renovation to connect to the home’s rustic character without becoming overly traditional.

Although the finished layout appears simple, creating that simplicity required a thoughtful reconfiguration. We moved plumbing to give each fixture more breathing room and installed two pocket doors to eliminate cumbersome door swings. The change created a clearer path through the room and allowed us to incorporate a slim, full-height storage cabinet without making the space feel crowded.

A new window brings natural light into the bathroom and frames the hills outside. Warm knotty alder was used to trim window, doors, and baseboards, carrying the character of the rest of the house into the remodeled space. In contrast, contemporary gray Euro-style cabinets introduce crisp lines and understated sophistication. The flush-panel doors, minimal hardware, softly patterned quartz countertop, and clean-lined fixtures keep the vanity feeling tailored yet minimal. An illuminated LED mirror provides even, flattering light while adding a subtle modern glow.

We replaced the old bathtub with a frameless glass walk-in shower, tiled it with understated gray subway tile, and added a compact quartz bench. The shower floor’s river rock mosaic tile brings in an organic element reminiscent of a mountain stream.

The feature Ellen and Tom appreciate most, however, is one they feel rather than see. Beneath the large-format neutral floor tile, radiant heat turns cold mountain mornings into something much gentler. Tom now jokes that the heated floor is the retirement luxury he never knew he needed, and he’s not sure how they managed so long without it.

Today, the bathroom feels brighter, warmer, and noticeably easier to move through. The wood doors and trim keep the aesthetic aligned with its Pine Brook Hills surroundings, while the streamlined cabinetry, quiet palette, and thoughtful lighting give it a fresh sense of ease. What was once a chilly, awkward room has become a peaceful daily retreat- simple in appearance, but like a breath of fresh air to the people who use it.
