Mountain Basement Project

Turning a forgotten basement into the heart of the home.

When Tim and Grace purchased their mountain home in the late-2010s, they dreamed of creating a cozy space filled with family memories. A few years later, with the arrival of their child, they quickly realized their growing family needed more functional living space. The basement seemed like the obvious solution—but it was far from usable. It was cold, drafty, and poorly laid out, with exposed cinder block walls, unsafe electrical wiring, dim inadequate lighting, and a rolling tile floor that was uneven by more than three inches in some areas. A structural post awkwardly placed in the center of the room made the space even more difficult to use. The laundry area was in even worse condition, with crumbling particle board walls and virtually no usable utility space. Even the family dog avoided going downstairs, and the basement ended up serving as little more than a chaotic catch-all.

Determined to transform the basement into a comfortable and functional extension of their home, a major renovation began. We started by framing new walls along the perimeter, concealing the cinder block and allowing for proper insulation. The awkward center post was removed and replaced with a sleek, supportive beam that opened up the entire space. Dangerous electrical systems were updated, plumbing issues were resolved, and a hydronic radiator system was installed to bring steady, comfortable warmth. Recessed LED lighting brightened every corner, while the uneven floors were leveled and finished with luxurious vinyl plank flooring for durability and comfort.

A full bathroom, complete with a relaxing soaking tub, was added, along with a stylish new stair railing matching the home’s alder wood trim. The laundry room was also overhauled, now featuring a convenient storage closet. The transformation was nothing short of extraordinary. Today, Tim, Grace, their son, and the dog spend most of their family time in their warm, inviting new space. They've effectively increased their home’s conditioned space by 60%, significantly boosting its value—and their happiness.
